How much does a conservatory cost?
The nuts and bolts of how much your conservatory will eventually cost can depend on a lot of things. First of all, there is the size of the build, then the quality of the framework involved and the type of glass that you incorporate, not to mention the actual cost of installation and perhaps the bespoke design if you are going down that route.
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find a generalisation in prices because of the individual nature of most builds. While you can pick up a simple, ready-made conservatory at any DIY store for as little as £2,000 most homeowners are looking for something that is a little higher quality, an end product that is made to measure and fits their house appropriately. The average cost of a average sized conservatory can be anywhere between £5,000 and £13,000 and presents a substantial investment for any homeowner but the cost can rise steeply when you begin to change materials and designs. Not only do you have to factor in the cost of the structural build but also decorating the interior, particularly laying down a suitable floor.
There are a few places online where you can find a rough estimate of what you will need to pay, if you look hard enough, but much will depend on getting quotes from individual installers and comparing like for like. According to some sources:
- The average price paid for a conservatory is around £6,800.
- For an Edwardian conservatory that measures 3.5 x 3.5 metres you should expect to pay in the region of £8,600.
- One online company suggests that a 16 square metre Edwardian conservatory could cost up to £11,000.
- If you want to have a wood frame rather than a uPVC one, then the cost could range between £20,000 and as much as £50,000 for a larger construction.
- You need to add on the cost of installation, of course, and this can be anywhere between £2,000 and £3,000 for an average structure, more if the design is more complex.
- If you want to have a P shaped conservatory, then the average cost is between £20,000 and £25,000.
- If you want something more durable like aluminium for your frame, then you should expect to pay 10% more than the uPVC equivalent.
As you can see there is a great deal of variation in the amount you are going to have to pay for your ideal conservatory, even from one area of the UK to the next. This is why it is good advice to settle on your budget before looking at the right installation for your home.
The good news is investment in a good quality conservatory can add to the value of your home. According to The Telegraph:
“A conservatory (cost £5,000-£30,000) can add around 7 per cent to the value, while a full-blown extension (£10,000-£30,000) adds 11 per cent.”
Much does, however, depend on how well your new conservatory fits the surrounding house. Many badly chosen builds seem like they have been simply plonked onto the side or the back of the house which is why it is imperative to take time to sort out the right design and materials. Although less costly than a full-blown extension, a conservatory installation isn’t the kind of project you can do on the cheap, especially if you want to add value to your home.

The key to getting value for money when you look to install a conservatory is to obtain a number of quotes, preferably from national and local companies. While you should deliberate carefully in the choice of design, you should also be taking as much time as possible with who you select to supply and install your brand new conservatory.
