Cost of Doors
The cost of doors can vary considerably depending on the type, material they are made of and design as well as whether they are bought pre-made or fabricated for a particular doorway. There are also variations such as the energy efficiency of the door and you should expect to pay 10 to 15% more for an A rated door over a C rated one.
As with most products, opting for the cheapest one on the market is not always the most cost effective in the long run. A good door can last plenty of years and making the right investment initially is important.
Domestic Front and Back Doors
If you are choosing a readymade product from a DIY supplier such as B&Q or Wickes then you should expect to pay in the region of £250 for a uPVC door and about £450 for something like a white oak one. Both usually include the multipoint locking mechanism and handle. This does not include the installation cost which could add as much as another £100 to £200 onto the price.
Most new front doors need to have the right frame installed and are often made to measure which can again increase the cost. Realistically you can spend anywhere between £500 and £1,000 for a front or back door depending on the quality and design you choose.
Internal Doors
Internal doors are significantly cheaper than external ones and you can pick up a low cost one from as little as £30 ranging up to several hundred for hardier, more ornate products. These are much easier to install than front and back doors but, as prefabricated doors are rarely a perfect fit, you still may need to employ an installer if you don’t have the necessary DIY skills. For offices, interior doors normally need to have some fire retardant quality which can add additional cost.
Double Leaf Doors
Double doors are usually reserved for larger houses and offices where the property has the room for a more substantial installation. These can cost anywhere from £500 or £1,000 or more depending on whether they are pre-made or tailored for a particular property and the level of design included.
French Windows
French doors provide an elegant touch to a property, particularly when used to access the back garden. They can cost anywhere between £1,000 and £2,000 depending on the style and material chosen. As with windows, because French doors are largely made of glass, the quality of glazing is often more important when it comes to considering energy efficiency and how it maintains the warmth of a room throughout the year.
Stable or Dutch Doors
Stable or Dutch Doors are split in two so you can open the top half whilst keeping the bottom closed. They are popular with pet owners or those with young families and the price is comparable with normal front and back doors. The issue you need to consider before having one installed is the security and integrity of the door itself and spending a little bit more on the product is worth the effort is you want to stay safe.
Sliding Doors
Similar to French doors, sliding ones are a good option for the back garden especially if you have a patio to step out onto. They can cost considerably more than normal doors and you should realistically expect to pay between £1,500 and £2,500 for good quality ones that are built to last. Of course, a lot will depend on the size of the installation.
Automatic Doors
Automatic doors are normally seen in offices and businesses rather than on domestic premises. A simple automatic swing door can cost around £3,500 including installation and a set of double sliding automatic doors could set you back in the region of £10,000. There is also the question of ongoing maintenance that is required over the lifetime of the doors that can add extra costs onto the initial payment.
Revolving Doors
Revolving or rotating doors can cost a similar amount to automatic doors and, of course, need the foyer space to install as they protrude both onto the outside and inside of the building. Cost will also depend on whether the door revolves automatically or has to be pushed by the person gaining entrance to the building. Again, you need to add on the cost of ongoing maintenance over the lifetime of the installation.
Garage Doors
Garage door prices vary considerably. You can get a standard door set for around £250 but if you are looking for something a little more hi-tech then you could be spending anything up to a couple of thousand.
