Cost of Garage Doors

The good news is there are garage doors to suit almost every pocket and if you have the skills you can also save on installation by installing the product you choose yourself. Much will depend on the type of garage door you want, the size and what you want to use it for. For example, if your garage is being changed into a living or working space then you will want doors that come with added insulation and if you require it to open automatically that will add onto the cost.

Standard Garage Doors

A garage door can cost as little as £200 up to just over £1,000 for an average sized space. You can buy online from large stores such as Wickes for between £300 and £700 depending on the style you choose and the material used to construct the garage door. One thing that you may need to be aware of is that these prices often don’t include the frame and mechanism which can add onto the cost. Most specialist garage door installers will offer a wide range of products and the price normally includes the mechanism and installation, though it always wise to check.

Obviously the size of your garage door is also going to have an impact on the cost. A roller shutter style that measures about 14 by 16 feet can cost up to £1,300 including installation.

Automatic Garage Doors

Deciding to have a garage door that opens by remote control can up the price you pay but there are still some bargains out there if you look around. For instance, one installer is currently offering a standard set of doors in selected styles for as little as £600 plus a cost of between £200 and £450 for installation depending on where in the UK you live.

There are a number of issues you need to consider when deciding on an automatic garage door. The first is the guarantee that the supplier offers. These generally range between 1 and 5 years for the automatic mechanism (as opposed to the guarantee for your actual door which could be as much as ten years). Where possible, settle for the longer warranty when it comes to your locking and automation mechanism and make sure you check the terms and conditions which will undoubtedly include regular maintenance.

There are added extras that could add to the cost of your automatic doors. This might include whether you have a manual override kit that can add £100 or a battery backup that can be as much as £500.

Where garage doors are concerned, spending a little extra money can actually save you regretting it later on but it pays to make sure you are getting the complete package you need.

Insulated Garage Doors

If you are using your garage for something other than parking the car, then installing doors with extra insulation is a must. This can add anything up to a few hundred pounds onto the final cost but is well worth the extra expenditure.

Upscale Garage Doors

If you want a garage door that adds more than a little luxury to your home then you are obviously going to need to pay more. If you opt for something like the Rundum range of steel, aluminium or wood doors, for example, then you are looking at a price tag of between £2,000 and £3,000 depending on your bespoke requirements.

Installing Your Garage Door

If you having your door installed by a professional, then you should be aware that this involves a significant amount of work. First the old door needs to be removed and then the current mechanism which can often be quite complex. The installer will need to dispose of your old garage door and mechanism safely and will probably have to put in a new frame for your new garage door. Then the replacement mechanism will need to be installed, along with any electronic systems that you have decided on. And finally, the new door will need to be tested to make sure it is working properly. Depending on the type of door you have installed, this can add in the region of two to four hundred pounds to the final bill.

Finding the Right Garage Door

The key to finding the right door is making sure that you shop around. The great news is that this is a very competitive market and if you look hard enough you should be able to find some excellent bargains that help keep the costs down. There are a number of issues that you need to consider particularly if you are opting for an automatic garage door, not least the level of security, what happens when it doesn’t work, the warranty and how much maintenance you are going to need in the future. As with any product, it is imperative to take your time and weigh up your options carefully before you settle on a particular product or installer.
