Cost of French and Patio Doors

Much will depend on the size, quality and the type of doors you are having installed and whether you go for a local supplier or one who operates nationally. With the need for better security and energy efficiency, it is wiser to spend a little more to make sure all the bases are covered rather than end up with an installation that is not entirely fit for purpose and could pose problems in the long run.

This is particularly true of French and patio doors where quality is paramount if you want to stay safe and warm all year round.

A lot will also depend on whether you are replacing existing doors or putting in a whole new one for your house which could involve knocking down a wall for the opening, bricking up any existing door area, plastering and decorating, as well as putting in the frame and the window. Shopping around for the right local builder who offers this service rather than opt for a standard double glazing firm can often mean you get the best price but you should always follow our simple advice for finding installers.

Do you need planning permission?

Windows and patio doors are generally considered acceptable installations and don’t need planning permission. If you have any doubt at all, for instance if you live in a conservation area, then you can simply contact your local council for advice.

Cost of French Doors

Prices will depend on the material used, the energy efficiency of the glass and the size of the installation. You can buy premade French doors for as little as £500 but should realistically be expecting to pay in the region of £1,000 for high quality doors. This does not include installation, the cost of which will vary depending on whether you are replacing existing doors or need more extensive build work which means you could be paying anything from an extra £500 to £1,000.

Cost of Patio Doors

Patio doors are a little cheaper than traditional French doors but much will depend on how secure you want them to be. With the possibility of larger/wider installations you can be expected to pay anything from £400 for uPVC doors to £2,000 for specially constructed, extra wide aluminium ones. Again the cost of installation by a qualified professional will depend on the amount of work that needs to be undertaken.

Folding Patio Doors

These are generally more expensive and can stretch to £2,000 and even £3,000 depending on the size of the installation. Compared to normal sliding patio doors and French doors there are certain issues concerning security that need to be addressed which add to the price as well as considerations over future maintenance that can cause a problem if you opt for a cheaper product. The more space that you have to cover with your slide doors the more you should be focused on the quality. Inexpensive folding or bi-fold patio doors can drop or warp over time and there can be problems with the hinges.
